2nd Prize for the Heimatblick in Stolberg
The further development of the Zincoli site

We have won second prize in the “Heimatblick” implementation competition for the Zincoli chimney, sponsored by the City of Stolberg, Germany. In an interdisciplinary collaboration with the artist duo Berger&Berger of Paris and London-based Djao-Rakitine Ltd Landscape Architecture, a design was developed that reflects history while providing glimpses into and laying foundation stones for the future of Stolberg.

The glass, metal, and chemical industries continue to shape the Stolberg cityscape to this day, as well as the northwestern Münsterbusch district that is now a residential area. The 42,200-square-meter Zincoli grounds for which the city of Stolberg sponsored a competition are located here. Areas that are currently idle were formerly used for processing zinc and manufacturing brass. In the future, they will become the site of a small-scale commercial zone. The approximately 80-meter-tall “Zincoli chimney” stands at the very center. It previously served to expel toxic gases but today is simply a part of industrial history. The chimney is now to be retained, renovated, and integrated as a landmark in the urban planning concept. The open areas surrounding the chimney are also to be designed.

Together with the French artist duo Berger&Berger of Paris and London-based Djao-Rakitine Ltd Landscape Architecture, we developed a dialogic landscape concept that arises from the location and the existing qualities and an art installation that respects the Zincoli chimney as a landmark are created.
