caspar. was recognized by the jury of experts in the two-stage urban design competition for the METRO Campus in Düsseldorf.
According to the competition brief, the METRO Campus will create a new, vital, and green urban district in Düsseldorf-Flingern that will reinterpret the elements of the city, including streets, buildings, and courtyards. The 9.2-hectare area located between Schlüterstrasse, Walter-Eucken-Strasse, and Metrostrasse is planned as a car-free, future-driven, model district with a sustainable mix of uses. In addition to the METRO AG headquarters, a new space will be made available for residential, retail, service, and leisure opportunities, with an important focus on healthy living and working conditions.
The ensemble comprises a central site with a market hall, fountains, a restaurant, a café, a media market, businesses, a multi-mode mobility station, offices, and residences. The district is accessed via a spacious square. The Campus park serves as a green centerpiece framed by various structures. Different floor systems generate an exciting dialog between horizontal perimeter construction and individual vertical buildings on the park side. The motif of the residential courtyard defines the southern edge of the district. The area is also dominated by a residential tower with sharing options, a restaurant, and common areas. Together with the high-rise to the west, the seven-story extension of the existing METRO headquarters forms an ensemble of three structures. In the open area, a trio of outdoor spaces meets users’ needs, from plazas and pathways to courtyards and the Campus park. Planted roof surfaces are used for urban gardening and as community gardens.
