In the two-stage urban design competition for the 9.2 hectare METRO area in Düsseldorf Flingern, we were one of six finalists, qualifying us for the second round. Our design finished ahead of a total of 15 participating teams. The awarding authority for the competition was METRO PROPERTIES. A new urban quarter, the METRO Campus, with a vital and sustainable mix of uses is to be created between Schlüterstrasse, Walter-Eucken-Strasse, and Metrostrasse. In addition to the headquarters of METRO AG, which will remain on the campus, a new space is planned for residential, retail, service, and leisure opportunities. Healthy living and working conditions are an important focus for the development of the new car-free district.
The designs were made available to the public in a digital participation process until May 7, 2021, on a website. Interested parties had two weeks to comment on the models of the district development. The winning design will be announced at the end of June 2021.
