The design for the expansion of the Phoenix Gymnasium in Dortmund creates a striking urban landmark at the entrance to the Hörde neighborhood. As a compact, four-story structure along Fassstrasse, it provides a clear spatial boundary to the heavily trafficked street while simultaneously creating a sheltered open space that extends the existing school campus.

A Campus Where Everything Is Close By

The main entrance on Alfred-Trappen-Strasse improves wayfinding and connects the new building, the gymnasium, and the existing structure via short routes. A plaza-like space between the sports hall and the extension encourages interaction and lingering, while the polygonal design of the open space echoes and further develops the formal language of the existing schoolyard. Landscaped gathering areas, seating, and school gardens create versatile spaces for learning, socializing, and relaxation, and strengthen the campus’s identity.

New Learning Environments

The architecture combines durable materials with an atmosphere that fosters learning. A rear-ventilated metal facade featuring horizontal bands and projecting balconies lends the building a timeless character, while its warm color palette pays homage to the site’s historic brick architecture. Inside, exposed wood surfaces, natural materials, and sturdy flooring create a calm environment that fosters a sense of identity. The learning areas are organized into flexible clusters that facilitate instruction, group work, and informal interaction in equal measure. The forum, library, and common areas form the hub of communication, complemented by a shared rooftop terrace overlooking the campus and the cityscape. Mobile furniture, unobstructed sightlines, and glare-free natural light and LED lighting create adaptable learning spaces that offer a high quality of stay.

Sustainable Design and Flexible Use

The design takes a holistic approach to sustainability that integrates environmental, economic, and social aspects. A compact building structure reduces energy consumption and heat loss through the building envelope, while a hybrid structural system combining wood and reinforced concrete—featuring wood-concrete composite floors—conserves resources and reduces carbon emissions. The energy concept includes decentralized ventilation units with heat recovery, an air-to-water heat pump using a natural refrigerant, and photovoltaic systems on extensively greened retention roofs. Rainwater is stored and used for irrigation; in the future, it is also planned to use it for toilet systems. Demountable and recyclable components based on the cradle-to-cradle principle, low-maintenance materials, and flexible floor plans ensure long-term usability. Digital displays in the entrance area show energy and water consumption and simultaneously integrate sustainability as a learning topic into everyday school life.
