Our entry for the GOLDBECK competition received interest from around 250 offices, and twelve were selected to submit proposals. The new GOLDBECK high-rise building forms the northern edge of the campus, combining system construction, architecture and identity to create a clear statement: a precise building volume that continues the campus logic while establishing its own distinct identity.
In urban design terms, the tower blends in perfectly with its surroundings. It aligns with the existing axes, reinforcing the linear structure along Ummelner Strasse and creating a striking gateway at the northern end. Together with the system centre, it defines a clearly defined public space that improves orientation and strengthens circulation paths. The two-story main entrance at the base of the tower creates a clear point of arrival. Circulation is intuitive — logical, legible and concise — from the forecourt through the lobby into the tower.
The building’s structure consistently follows GOLDBECK’s system construction logic: a 1.35-meter grid, a modular structural system and a compact service core define the organisation of the facade and floor plan, making the structure legible from the outside. The transparent, cantilevered base opens the building towards the campus and marks the entrance. The ground floor features an open programme comprising a double-height lobby, conference areas, a café and co-working spaces. Above these are the modular office floors. The programme is clearly zoned: public functions in the base and flexible workspaces above. Each typical 400 m² floor can be divided into two units if needed, enabling a range of usage scenarios. The facade translates the system logic into a calm, vertical design with precise detailing and a strong long-distance impact.
The building’s structure and facade both follow the logic of system construction: a classic system facade is complemented by an external layer of aluminium tubular elements. The varying diameters and depths of these elements create a differentiated yet calm facade with spatial depth. Sustainability is an integral part of the design. Industrially prefabricated elements ensure quality and efficiency, and the building’s energy supply is supported by geothermal energy and photovoltaics. The modular structure allows for long-term adaptability and future reuse. The fire safety concept is based on a compact core with a protected stairwell and elevators. This centralized organization enables flexible floor plans and diverse usage units without the need for structural intervention.
