Our design for the Werftterrassen in Kiel-Gaarden impressed the jury in both the urban planning and building construction phases of the competition. We were awarded second prize for our design of part of the construction site in the second phase.
Phase 1: Urban Planning
An attractive residential quarter for around 3,000 people is set to be developed on an undeveloped site in the coming years. Our urban development concept provides clear structures and open, inviting spaces. A public path and green space will connect the Quartiersanger with Pastor-Gosch-Weg and will be complemented by play and sports facilities, a kiosk and a variety of recreational areas. A variety of contemporary housing types, ranging from large family apartments to student flats, will ensure a lively mix of uses. The design is characterised by sustainability, accessibility, connectivity, a high proportion of green space, and the idea of a “15-minute city” with short distances and good public transport connections.
Phase 2: Building construction
In the second phase of the competition, participants were tasked with developing the individual building plots with independent buildings.
Blue A: A perimeter block development featuring a spacious inner courtyard, flexible Z-shaped floor plans, commercial space on the ground floor and ecological features such as wood-hybrid construction, green retention roofs and photovoltaics.
Red B (2nd prize): An open perimeter block with large green spaces, diverse apartment types, communal areas and flexible floor plans to accommodate different lifestyles.
Green C: A garden courtyard with barrier-free apartments, modular construction, and commercial units for restaurants or care facilities.
All plots focus on sustainable hybrid construction methods, reused materials, energy-efficient technology and flexible floor plans – to create durable, resource-efficient living spaces.
