We are delighted to have won third prize for our bridge design in Bremerhaven, which we planned in collaboration with Werner Sobek Berlin (structural engineering) and Dr. Schippke + Partner (mechanical engineering).
In the centre of the new shipyard quarter, we are building a bridge that is more than just a crossing. It will not only connect two banks, but also create a new centre for the quarter, the city and its people. Rather than providing a straightforward connection from A to B, the new bascule bridge connects A to A, forming a symbolic and functional link that unites the neighbourhood on both sides of the harbour basin, treating the banks as equal urban spaces.
When closed, the bridge remains almost invisible — flat, restrained and with clear lines. It blends into the harbour landscape without disturbing it. However, when open, it becomes a sculptural object: a precisely folded ribbon that rises up and becomes a temporary landmark.
Its shape is inspired by ship hulls, paying silent homage to the location’s maritime history. The design avoids unnecessary embellishment, focusing instead on structure, geometry, and the charm of the moment when movement becomes visible.
